The Alpine course combines backpacking and rock climbing for an outstanding 15-day high mountain expedition culminating in an attempt to climb the Grand Teton. No wonder this is our most popular program!

Each year, the owner and director picks one course to personally lead. We call this Whig's Thule - meaning Whig's special. These trips vary in everything except quality, fun, safety, and excitment. With almost 20 years of personal leadership experience worldwide, this promises to be a trip to remember; jokes on the trail, laugh-out-loud campfires, multiple peaks to hike and climb, boundless Wyoming skies and forest, and traveling with our own lovable mountain man. In 2006, our own Whig Mullins will personally lead the Alpine Course.

Description: Arrival in Jackson Hole, Wyoming begins our preparation for the expedition. Our base camp is just ten minutes from the airport in Grand Teton National Park.

The backpacking section leaves the next day to explore some of the world's most breathtaking natural environments. We may see eagles, moose, elk, and big horn sheep. While backpacking, we learn the fundamentals of wilderness travel. Our journey may take us glissading on a snowy peak, swimming in an alpine lake, exploring high mountain meadows, and up peaks.

Mountain climbing provides a change of pace and a change of altitude. The group spends two-days attending the world-famous Exum Mountain School learning the fundamentals of climbing technique and safety. No previous rock climbing experience necessary. Climbing instruction and a hike up to the Garnet Canyon Saddle culminate in a summit attempt of the Grand Teton. After sleeping in the Exum Guide hut, we are greeted by the morning sun as we head for the Grand Tetons' lofty summit of 13,770 feet.

We enjoy a final banquet and a campfire as we celebrate our unforgettable experience and watch one last sunset over the Tetons.
